Special testing applications or complex integrated tests of audio systems may require controlling and obtaining data from stand-alone instrumentation equipment such as digital multimeters, programmable power supplies or switching devices. The External Devices (EXD) module extends the capabilities of the QC System by providing a communication interface for GPIB compliant devices. Complex sequences can be set up quickly with simple scripting while more simple tasks can be handeled with presets. Fully integrated into QC tests, this module provides limit handling and data logging for externally acquired measurement data. In addition to GPIB handling, the EXD provides many other interfaces for user interaction, control and data acquisition. This includes Windows Bluetooth Radio control for automated testing of Bluetooth anabled devices (pairing, profile and volume control).

Handset Electronics and Acoustic Test
The figure shows an example test scenario for a handset test including electronics and acoustics. The DUT supply voltage is provided by a programmable power supply with GPIB interface controlled by the EXD task. A digital multimeter is used to test DC current and resistance of the handset electronics. The EXD sequence triggers the measurement and checks the results against limits using to generate PASS/FAIL verdicts. This all is combined with acoustical test of the receiver and microphone using the KLIPPEL Analyzer 3 and QC Sound Pressure (SPL) task.
Bluetooth Speaker and Mic Test
In order to simplify and automatize testing of Bluetooth-enabled speakers and headphones, the EXD enhances any QC test sequence with Bluetooth pairing and control through Windows Bluetooth radio.
Located before the first test step, the EXD triggers DUT address scanning (e.g. via NFC tag) and pairing or the next available device in pairing mode can be connected automatically. The A2DP audio profile is activated to test the speaker response first (the QC hardware settings are configured to use the Default Playback Device for test signal output).The test microphone is connected to the Laser Card of the KA3 to capture the DUT response.
In the next step, the HFP (hands-free) profile is activated in order to test the DUT’s microphone response. The sound source (active speaker) is connected to the output of the KA3 XLR Card to play back the test signal. In this step, the Default Communication Capture Device is used as input device.
