Challenges and Solutions for Acoustical Measurements of Large TVs and Panel Loudspeakers by Ruben Hauschild
Monday, May 15th, 2023 at 11:00 am - 12:00 am

Abstract: Loudspeakers, TVs, monitors, and other contemporary audio devices increasingly utilize speaker arrays, flat panels, enclosure surfaces, or the screen (OLED) itself for sound reproduction. This implies a large sound radiating area resulting in a complex directivity pattern. Those devices create new challenges for the physical evaluation of the sound quality concerning comprehensive testing in a short time, reproducibility of the results, and practical diagnostics. This workshop gives an overview of the new standard IEC 60268-23, providing good practices and new measurement methods developed for those audio devices.

The standard defines the near and far field evaluation as well as the statistical evaluation of the direct and reflected sound generated in an acoustical zone representing the typical user applications. Single-value characteristics derived from the measured SPL frequency responses simplify the evaluation of the small-signal performance. The large-signal performance can be assessed by a single-point measurement placed in the near field of the loudspeaker, where nonlinear distortion and acoustical defects can be measured at high SNR. The tutorial shows how the nonlinear distortion measured with a sinusoidal sweep or multi-tone complex can be extrapolated to any point in the sound field. Finally, the standard provides a framework for defining meaningful maximum SPL output and corresponding input values.
